Trends
Topic 1 Literature review:
The majority of students demonstrated an extensive review of empirical literature and a good analysis of the findings. However, the majority of students did not demonstrate practical applications of their findings and analysis by translating these into suggestions for a hiring line manager.
Topic 2 Case Study:
Students on the whole tended to first profile the organisation’s recruitment and selection practices and then analyse them, after which they provided some recommendations for change. Some reports were heavily balanced towards profiling the organisation rather than critiquing the recruitment and selection practices. Whilst some demonstrated in-depth understanding of the theoretical concepts in how they critiqued the organisation’s recruitment and selection practices, the majority showed a basic understanding of the theoretical concepts but did not apply it in their analysis of the organisation’s recruitment and selection practices. A number of students made generalisations without contextualising their arguments. Many students also tended to in their recommendations briefly assert changes to the organisation’s recruitment and selection practices without demonstrating their analysis of this issue in the body of the essay.
Common Observations for Topic 1 & 2 responses:
On the whole students demonstrated:
very good appreciation of recruitment and selection theoretical concepts
Strengthening required in the following areas:
Harvard Referencing skills in the body of the essay and in the bibliography
References
First, read your subject outline about why you need to reference. Then (option 1) go to , choose the link about referencing. This will give you advice. The Harvard referencing page (the one you must use in Commerce) will tell you how to format every possible kind of reference. Alternatively (option 2), open your textbook at the end of any chapter, and use the references there to guide you.
Structuring your report Either use the handout I gave you in class as a guide, or use any alternative source on how to write reports. Alternatively, just google the topic 'report writing'. The source will always give you advice about structure. It is a good idea not to leave the +ve and -ve issues of your organisation's hiring until the end. Students do not leave themselves space to do this well, and it is the most important part of the assignment. For topic 1, I am not fussy about the format. An essay approach is fine.
In general
For students who are not sure about all this, it is very important to find out. There are workshops and other sources of help available at UoW. See in particular StartSmart and other Tertiary Literacies programs on the 'Resources for Students' page.
Finally
If you still have questions, email me and I will try to help. If you need some more time for your assignment because of illness or other serious problem beyond your control, get a doctor's certificate or other documentation and apply for academic consideration. |
