For centuries of human exploration, the Arctic has been associated with extensive sea ice. During recent decades, however, satellite observations have documented major changes in the extent, thickness and volume of Arctic sea ice.
The decline in Arctic sea ice is one of the most visible indicators of a changing climate system. However, climate change is not represented by one glacier, one cold year or one local observation alone.
The more important question is how long-term patterns emerge from many different measurements and how those changes affect both natural systems and human communities.
| Climate Topic | Essay Focus |
|---|---|
| Arctic Sea Ice | Long-term environmental change |
| Glaciers | Local variation versus global trend |
| Communities | Human experience and traditional knowledge |
| Sustainability | Responses in food, energy and land use |
Satellite observations have made it possible to examine Arctic sea ice over several decades with much greater consistency than was previously possible.
The importance of Arctic sea ice is not limited to the amount of ice visible on the ocean surface. Changes in sea ice can affect ecosystems, wildlife, transportation, local communities and broader climate feedback processes.
For an Environmental Essay, this is where description needs to become analysis. It is not enough to say that “ice is melting”. The writer needs to ask what is changing, over what period, according to which evidence and why the change matters.
Sea Ice Extent、Glacier Mass还是Temperature?
The Arctic-Boreal Vulnerability Experiment, commonly known as ABoVE, was designed to improve understanding of environmental change across northern regions.
Scientific measurements are important, but environmental change is also experienced by people who live in those regions.
Communities across the circumpolar north have observed changes in weather patterns, ice conditions, wildlife and seasonal activities.
Changes affecting species such as caribou are particularly important because these animals may have cultural, nutritional and economic significance for northern communities.
This is where environmental research becomes more than a collection of temperature records. Scientific data and traditional knowledge can offer different perspectives on the same changing environment.
Climate discussions can become confusing when one glacier temporarily thickens or slows while the wider climate continues to warm.
Jakobshavn Glacier in Greenland provides a useful example.
Research discussed changes in ocean conditions near the glacier and a period in which colder water affected the rate of ice loss.
This local change does not automatically overturn the broader evidence for global warming.
Instead, it illustrates an important scientific principle: short-term and regional variation can occur within a long-term global trend.
| Observation | Weak Interpretation | Better Analysis |
|---|---|---|
| One glacier thickens temporarily | Global warming has stopped | Examine local ocean and atmospheric conditions |
| Cold year or season | Climate change is false | Separate short-term weather from long-term climate trends |
| Regional variation | All regions must change equally | Climate impacts differ across locations |
Environmental writing becomes particularly powerful when scientific evidence is connected with lived experience.
Climate narratives have been written by scientists, students, teachers, journalists, Indigenous communities, farmers, parents and people directly affected by environmental change.
These stories address subjects including biodiversity, water, energy, farming, pollution, indigenous culture, food, waste and urban environments.
The strength of such writing lies in its ability to connect a large global issue with a specific human experience.
A graph may show that an ecosystem is changing. A narrative can show what that change means to a family, a community or a way of life.
这个角度其实很好用:Environmental Essay不一定只能写成“scientists found A, report found B”。
Environmental narratives also show that climate change is connected with a much wider group of sustainability problems.
Food production, energy use, pollution, biodiversity, agriculture and water management do not exist as separate systems.
A farming practice may affect soil quality, emissions and biodiversity at the same time. Food waste influences both resource use and greenhouse-gas emissions. Energy choices affect economic development as well as environmental pressure.
This means that a strong Sustainability Essay often needs to examine connections rather than treating every environmental problem as an isolated issue.
The food system is one area in which climate mitigation and sustainability are closely connected.
Approaches such as regenerative agriculture, reducing food waste and shifting toward more plant-rich diets have been discussed as possible ways to reduce environmental pressure while continuing to provide food for a growing population.
However, solutions should not be presented as simple slogans.
Regenerative agriculture, dietary change and food-waste reduction all involve practical questions about land, cost, behaviour, infrastructure and local conditions.
| Sustainability Strategy | Potential Contribution | Critical Question |
|---|---|---|
| Regenerative Agriculture | Soil and land management | Can results scale across different regions? |
| Plant-rich Diet | Potential reduction in resource demand | How realistic is behavioural change? |
| Food Waste Reduction | Reduces unnecessary resource use | Where in the supply chain is waste occurring? |
Climate Change Essays often contain plenty of Evidence but very little Analysis.
A student may find a statistic about Arctic sea ice, another about food waste and another about renewable energy, then place all three into one paragraph.
The problem is that evidence only becomes useful when the writer explains the relationship between it and the Essay Question.
A good analytical paragraph usually asks:
What exactly does this evidence demonstrate?
Is the result local or global?
Is it short-term or long-term?
What other factors could explain the observation?
How strong is the evidence?
Why does it matter for the argument?
很多同学Evidence找得一点不少,Analysis却只有一句“This shows climate change is serious”。
Climate change is not represented by one measurement, one glacier or one unusually warm or cold season.
Long-term evidence from Arctic sea ice, glaciers and wider climate observations needs to be interpreted alongside regional variation and short-term environmental processes.
The Arctic also demonstrates why environmental research has a human dimension. Scientific observation, traditional knowledge and local experience can all contribute to understanding change.
At the same time, climate change is connected with wider sustainability questions involving food, energy, land use and resource management.
Effective environmental analysis therefore requires more than listing climate impacts. It requires the writer to connect evidence, scale, uncertainty and possible responses.
| Section | Writing Function |
|---|---|
