Finance Paper / Financial Analysis / case study
公司:J Sainsbury plc
Sainsbury historically operated across several retail and financial-service businesses, including grocery retail, Argos, clothing, loyalty services and financial products.
The company's strategy focused on offering customers quality, value and convenience while improving digital capabilities and maintaining balance-sheet strength.
In the historical 2018–2019 analysis, Sainsbury’s gross margin increased slightly from 6.61% to 6.92%.
For a grocery-led retailer, a relatively low gross margin is not automatically a negative signal because food retail normally operates with high sales volumes and significant cost of sales.
However, operating profit margin declined from 1.82% to 1.08%. This indicates that the improvement in gross margin did not fully translate into stronger operating profitability.
Several factors contributed to the pressure on profit, including wage increases, inflationary operating costs and changes associated with financial-services activities.
| Ratio | 2018 | 2019 | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gross Margin | 6.61% | 6.92% | Slight improvement in gross profitability |
| Operating Margin | 1.82% | 1.08% | Operating cost pressure weakened profitability |
| Post-tax Margin | 1.09% | 0.75% | Lower final profitability despite stable revenue base |
The original analysis shows that EPS decreased from 13.3 pence in 2018 to 9.1 pence in 2019.
Despite the decline in earnings per share, dividend per share increased from 10.2 pence to 11 pence.
This creates an interesting issue for investors. A company may maintain or increase dividends even when earnings weaken in order to support shareholder confidence, but this can reduce dividend cover and make future dividend sustainability more important.
P/E ratio also increased significantly during this historical period, partly reflecting market expectations surrounding the proposed Sainsbury–Asda merger.
However, that merger was blocked by the UK Competition and Markets Authority in 2019, showing why market valuation cannot be analysed purely from historical accounting numbers. Expectations and major strategic events also affect share prices.
Finance paper
Sainsbury’s historical liquidity ratios appeared relatively weak, but retail businesses require a different interpretation from many service companies.
Supermarkets normally hold significant inventory and generate cash rapidly through customer sales. Therefore, a low current ratio or acid-test ratio does not automatically mean that a retailer is unable to meet short-term liabilities.
Inventory days were around 26 days in the historical analysis. For a retailer, inventory management is particularly important because excessive inventory can tie up working capital and increase the risk of stock losses.
At the same time, longer payable periods can partly support working-capital management because goods may be sold before suppliers need to be paid.
| Liquidity factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Current Ratio | Ability to meet short-term obligations |
| Acid Test Ratio | Liquidity excluding inventory |
| Inventory Days | Speed at which inventory is converted into sales |
| Payable Days | Time available before suppliers need to be paid |
The historical analysis showed Sainsbury’s gearing falling from 21.62% in 2018 to 11.23% in 2019 as the company reduced net debt.
Lower gearing generally reduces financial risk because the business has less dependence on borrowed capital and lower interest obligations.
However, lower gearing should not automatically be described as “better”. Debt can also be used to finance investment and improve shareholder returns when borrowing costs are manageable.
This creates a useful Critical Analysis point:
Does debt reduction improve financial resilience, or does excessively conservative financing reduce opportunities for growth?
Interest cover should therefore be considered alongside gearing. A company with higher debt may still be financially stable if operating profit comfortably covers interest payments.
Cash flow is especially important because accounting profit and available cash are not the same thing.
A company may report positive profit while experiencing pressure on cash because of debt repayment, investment or working-capital movements.
In Sainsbury’s historical case, debt reduction had a noticeable influence on the use of cash. This helps explain why cash-flow analysis should be considered alongside profitability.
“Profit increased, therefore cash flow is good.”
Financial Analysis
Operating cash flow
Free cash flow
Debt repayment
Capital expenditure
Dividend payments
| 2025/26 Financial Indicator | Reported figure |
|---|---|
| Retail sales excl. VAT and fuel | £29.992bn |
| Retail underlying operating profit | £1.025bn |
| Retail free cash flow | £574m |
| Underlying EPS | 22.3p |
| Proposed dividend per share | 13.7p |
Does Sainsbury’s strategic focus on core grocery operations improve profitability and free cash flow over the long term?
| Layer | Example |
|---|---|
| Ratio | ROCE, Margin, Liquidity, Gearing |
| Trend | Compare several years instead of one isolated number |
| Industry | Compare with Tesco, Aldi, Lidl or other relevant competitors |
| Strategy | Explain how corporate strategy affects future financial performance |
The historical ratio analysis suggests that Sainsbury maintained a relatively stable retail business despite pressure on profitability, competition and operating costs.
Liquidity ratios appeared weak in absolute terms, but they need to be interpreted in the context of the supermarket business model and rapid inventory turnover.
Debt reduction improved financial resilience, although lower gearing should always be considered together with investment opportunities and the cost of capital.
More importantly, Financial Analysis should not end with historical ratios. Strategic changes, business disposals, industry competition and current cash generation can materially change how investors interpret the company.
Accounting Assignment?
A:不一定。
A:不建议。
Q:Sainsbury
