The research focuses on quality management and control in peer-to-peer platform companies. Academic studies, business reports, newspaper articles and company information can be used to support the analysis.
Because this is primarily a comparative case study, the purpose is not simply to describe Uber and eBay. The more important task is to identify how the two platforms manage transaction quality, customer expectations and operational risk despite having limited direct control over the individual transaction.
A secondary research approach is suitable because the analysis relies on existing evidence relating to customer satisfaction, rating systems, platform security, retention, benchmarking and quality management.
Advances in technology have continuously changed the way companies interact with consumers. Radio and television expanded the reach of advertising, while the Internet created something even more significant: the ability to connect buyers and sellers directly through digital platforms.
The development of e-commerce created several new business models. One of them is the peer-to-peer or platform-based transaction system, where a company provides the technology and rules that allow two users to complete a transaction.
eBay is a good example. The company provides a marketplace where buyers and sellers can find each other, while the sale itself is largely controlled by individual users.
Uber operates on a similar platform logic. The company provides technology that connects riders with drivers, while the actual service experience is delivered by an individual driver.
This creates an unusual Quality Management problem. How can a company maintain consistent service quality when thousands or millions of individual users are performing transactions independently?
The basic P2P system involves three parties: the customer, the provider and the platform.
Traditional businesses usually have more direct control over production and service delivery. A retailer can control employees, inventory and store procedures. A manufacturer can establish production standards.
Platform companies are different.

One of the most important mechanisms used by Uber and eBay is the rating system.
Instead of attempting to monitor every transaction directly, the platforms collect feedback from users after transactions are completed.
For Uber, ratings can provide information about driving behaviour, communication, cleanliness, route quality and the overall rider experience.
For eBay, feedback can help potential buyers evaluate a seller's reliability, communication, product description and delivery performance.
This is a clever form of decentralized quality control.

The platform can then identify repeated negative patterns and take action against users who consistently fail to meet expectations.
Customer Satisfaction is a key measure for platform companies because users can often switch between competing services relatively easily.
If a rider repeatedly experiences long waiting times, unexpected prices or poor service, another ride-hailing platform becomes an alternative.
Likewise, if an online buyer experiences inaccurate product descriptions, delayed delivery or weak customer support, another marketplace may appear more attractive.
This means acquiring users is only one part of platform growth. Retaining those users is equally important.

For this reason, customer retention should be considered together with customer satisfaction. High satisfaction can support repeated platform use, while recurring quality problems can encourage users to move to competitors.
Technology companies often invest heavily during the growth stage. They need to develop software, attract users, improve infrastructure and enter new markets.
However, rapid growth can create new Quality Management problems.
For Uber, an increasing number of riders and drivers can make supply and demand more difficult to balance at particular times and locations. Pricing and availability can therefore affect both rider and driver satisfaction.
For eBay, growth means more products, more sellers and more transactions. At the same time, this increases the difficulty of monitoring product descriptions, seller behaviour, disputes and fraud.
Growth therefore produces a trade-off:
Scale brings more users and revenue opportunities, but it also creates more points where quality can fail.
Total Quality Management focuses on continuous improvement rather than waiting until serious problems appear.
For platform businesses, this means collecting customer feedback, identifying recurring complaints and modifying processes or technology to reduce those problems.
A Fishbone Diagram, for example, could help identify why a platform is receiving customer complaints.

The purpose is not to blame one user for every complaint. Instead, the platform should identify whether repeated problems reveal weaknesses in the wider system.
Quality in digital platforms is not limited to speed and convenience. Users also expect their personal and financial information to be protected.
For online marketplaces such as eBay, account security and transaction security directly affect trust.
For ride-hailing platforms, users may provide identity, location, payment and travel information, meaning privacy protection also becomes part of the service experience.
A major security incident can therefore damage customer satisfaction even when the platform's basic service continues to function.
In digital businesses, perceived quality and perceived security are closely connected.
Benchmarking allows a company to compare its service performance with competitors or industry leaders.
For eBay, marketplaces and large online retailers can provide useful benchmarks for customer satisfaction, transaction convenience, delivery expectations and platform usability.
For Uber, competing ride-hailing platforms provide benchmarks for waiting time, pricing transparency, app experience and driver availability.
However, benchmarking should not mean blindly copying another company.
Two businesses may operate under different models. A retailer that controls inventory and distribution has more direct control over fulfilment than a marketplace relying on independent sellers.
Therefore, a strong Case Study should compare not only performance, but also explain why different business models produce different quality outcomes.
Uber and eBay do not operate a traditional supply chain in exactly the same way as manufacturers or retailers. However, drivers and sellers perform a role similar to external service providers.
The platform therefore needs to attract reliable participants.
If Uber cannot attract enough suitable drivers, customers may experience longer waiting times.
If eBay cannot attract reliable sellers with desirable products, buyers have fewer reasons to use the marketplace.
This creates a two-sided Quality Management problem: the company must satisfy customers while also keeping the providers who make the platform useful.
Customer complaints provide useful information for Quality Management.
Quality Function Deployment, or QFD, can help connect what customers complain about with changes in platform design or operating processes.
For example, if riders frequently complain about poor routes, the platform might improve navigation tools or provide clearer route information.
If buyers complain about delivery uncertainty, an online marketplace might improve shipment tracking or introduce clearer seller standards.
The important point is to move from:
“Customers are complaining”
to:
“What system or process needs to change because customers are complaining?”
这才是Quality Management,而不是简单把差评删掉就当事情解决了。
Uber and eBay illustrate the unusual Quality Management challenges faced by platform companies.
They must manage customer expectations while relying on independent drivers, sellers, buyers and riders to complete transactions.
As a result, traditional supervision alone is not enough.
Rating systems, feedback, customer retention analysis, cybersecurity, benchmarking and continuous platform improvement become important parts of quality control.
Rapid growth also creates new problems. A platform may successfully acquire millions of users while simultaneously making service consistency harder to maintain.
The long-term challenge is therefore not simply to become larger. It is to grow while maintaining trust and service quality.
This is also why Quality Management in a P2P business should be viewed as a continuous process involving technology, users, rules and feedback rather than a single quality inspection.
