Introduction
Chapter One Negative Influence Coming from Holden’s Family
A.Lack of attachment to parents
Parents’ influences on their offspring are multifarious among which the most importantone perhaps is the source of affection. Without the aid of the Oedipus complex theoryteenagers’ attachment to their parents can be explained because the attachment is natural. When the young men or women suffer from strike from the society they rely on their parents’support to a great extent. A young woman who struggles to free herself from the bound of hermother will have continuous conflict with each other and more often than not depend on herfather. While a young man who wants to testify himself is a real man outside his family butfails has to return to his mother’s arm. The frustration the young suffer from shows howimportant it is that parents is the source of support. And when the youth realize that it is themwho make their parents happy they obtain the corresponding status in mind.

B.Confusion in adolescent identity
Apart from their parents, other family members exert influence on adolescents. Aninvestigation shows that elder brothers or sisters’ influence over them is placed at the thirdone with fathers’ at the first place and mothers’ at the second one. The following are littlebrothers’ or sisters’, aunts’, uncles’, grandfathers’ and finally grandmothers’ influence.D.B. is Holden’s elder brother who has a great talent of writing. Holden admired D.B.very much and even modeled himself on him. But now D.B. is working for Hollywood as aprostitute. The reason why Holden calls D.B. as “prostitute” is that he writes things not forwriting’s sake, it is for money’s sake instead which Holden hates most. The degree Holdenhates D.B.’s aim of life is so deep that he even says he hates movie too because of theconnection between D.B. and Hollywood.
Chapter Two Failure in Seeking Help from Surroundings
A.Feeling lost in schools
The past one century has witnessed a marvelous progress in American education, while adiversity of problems emerge in educational system. One of them is that most schools usescore to evaluate students’ performance thus they can be stimulated to move on in their study. There is no doubt that students do learn a lot from the subjects they actually do not like. Whileon the other hand, the thing they look upon is whether they can get high mark instead of howmuch they learn. So some scholars say the students are wasting their youth. One example isthat the students are not lack of the basic skill but the higher cognitive development, such aslogical writing and critical thinking. The schools Holden studies in are not exceptions. Among the subjects Holden flunks, one is Oral Expression. It is the course where each boy in class has to get up and make aspeech spontaneously. And if somebody disagrees he will be yelled at “Digression”. Holdensays that he is driven crazy by the rule because he thinks “Digression” is interestingsometimes. The result is that he got an F in it.
B.Feeling helpless in society
The Catcher in the Rye was published in the 1950s when it was shortly after the WorldWar II. At that time, the American government carried out the policy of Cold War to theoutside world and fascist type of hype and frightfulness to its own nation. Under the controlof McCarthyism people’s democratic rights were terribly threatened. Thus many youngpeople got rid of noble beliefs and lost their life goals. They killed the time by binging, chatting, dancing, fighting, making love and sleeping. This is the reason why they are called“lost generation” or “beat generation.” For the same token, the corresponding literatureappears. In addition, after World War II various prevalent new ideological trends and new ideasprovide theoretical basis to the lost generation. In the war, the large-scale killing Jewshappened in Nazi concentration camp and the throwing of the atomic bomb in Hiroshimagreatly shocked the people and made them hold a doubtful attitude to social moral standardsand value. Hence multitude kinds of new thoughts appeared. Many young men thought thatthe world is ridiculous, hostile, unknowable and the human are lonely. This kind ofphilosophy is the right need for the lost generation.
Chapter Three Frustration in Love World
A.Timid unrequited love to Jean
Jean is the only girl Holden truly loves. She was once Holden’s neighbor and becameclose friends with him. Then in the summer they came to know each other, Holden fell in lovewith Jean and understands her deeply.
B.Unsafe attempt to seek love
After Holden arrives in New York, he checks into Edmont Hotel. In the hotel Holdensees lots of pictures drawn by various perverts varying from a gray-haired man’s wearingwoman’s suits to a man and a woman’s squirting water out of their mouths at each other.Although the junk these people are, Holden is horny by seeing their activities. Before herealizes it Holden really wants to call Jean to have a talk, while finally he gives the idea upbecause he is not in the mood. As far as I am concerned, it is better to say that he respectsJean and tries to find other ways out. Thus, Holden dials Faith Cavendish who is a prostituteor a dump. The purpose why he dials her is that Holden wants to invite her out to havesomething connecting with sex. However, Faith refuses him because she thinks it is too late. Then Holden goes out of his room to the lobby to see what’s going on there. In the lobbyHolden meets three girls around thirty who look like prostitutes. Although they arewhory-looking blondes, Holden still starts to give them eye and invites them to dance withhim. But the girls start giggling because they think Holden is too young to give anybody theonce-over which annoys Holden very much. And finally, three of them say goodbye to Holdenbecause they have to go to bed in order to get up early to see the first show at Radio CityMusic Hall. In spite of being asked to stick around for a while, the girls refuse Holden andleave him alone in the lobby. Again, Holden misses the chance of paying sex.
C.Annoying abnormal love affairs
During the three days’ roaming in the city of New York, Holden encounters variouskinds of abnormal sexual relations which exert negative impact on his understanding ofnormal and natural sex. When Holden was at Whooton School, there was a peer named Luce who was Holden’sstudent adviser. The only thing Luce did was giving some sex talks late at night when therewas a bunch of guys in his room.
Conclusion
The Catcher in the Rye perhaps is the most controversial novel in American literatureand its protagonist, Holden, is indeed one of the earliest anti-heroes appearing incontemporary American literature. Critics’ comments on him are diversified. Some regard himas a rebel against the phony world, the sticker of the innocent world. Others hold the view thathe is a loser and a victim of modern society. Still others believe that Holden isn't an ordinaryteen-ager—he's a prodigy. He seems (and this is why his character can be so addictive) tohave something that few people ever consistently attain: an attitude toward life.According to Roger’s adolescent psychology, when analyzing adolescents the factorssuch as their age and surroundings can not be ignored. Only taking these objective factors intoaccount can the research be done thoroughly. This thesis analyzes The Catcher in the Rye’s protagonist, Holden, from the angle ofyouth psychology.
