本文保留原有“How to Write a Master’s Thesis or Project Report”写作指南的主要内容,对错误编号、乱码和不自然的英文进行了整理,并补充必要的中文说明。
A master’s thesis is a scholarly study presented by a degree candidate to a graduate committee for approval on behalf of the university. It is normally submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for a master’s degree.
After approval, the final version may be deposited in the university library or institutional repository so that it can be consulted by future students and researchers. A master’s thesis is therefore an important academic achievement and should be prepared and presented with care.
The purpose of this guide is to simplify and clarify the process of writing and presenting a Master’s Thesis or Project Report. More importantly, it aims to promote a high standard of academic presentation.
The guidelines allow a reasonable degree of flexibility because different academic disciplines use different forms of evidence, analysis and presentation. A thesis in engineering may include models, technical drawings and experimental results, while a thesis in business or social science may rely on questionnaires, interviews, case studies and statistical analysis.
Where a recognised academic discipline has its own published standards, the conventions of that discipline should normally take precedence. Students should follow the relevant university handbook, departmental guide, style manual or author guidelines used by a leading academic journal in their subject area.
Many students do not realise that variations from the traditional thesis format may be permitted. This guide therefore explains the standard structure while acknowledging that alternative formats may be acceptable when approved by the supervisor or department.
A Master’s Thesis or Project Report should normally contain the following sections in the order listed:
The Title Page
The Acceptance or Approval Page
The Abstract
The Acknowledgements(optional)
The Table of Contents
The List of Illustrations
The Main Text
The References or Bibliography
The Appendices
Not every university requires an Acceptance Page, and some institutions use an electronic approval system instead. However, the remaining sections are common in most Master’s Thesis and Project Report formats.
The title page should be concise and should identify the subject of the thesis clearly. It normally contains:
The full title of the thesis;
The student’s name;
The degree programme;
The name of the university;
The name of the department or school;
A formal submission statement;
The month and year of submission。
For example, the University of Southern Indiana format uses the following statement:
“Submitted to the Graduate Faculty in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Liberal Studies at the University of Southern Indiana.”
The date should normally include the official month of degree conferral and the year. Students following this specific institutional format should refer to Sample A provided in the original university guide.
The Impact of Remote Working on Employee Productivity: A case study of UK Technology Companies
The Acceptance Page records formal approval by the graduate faculty or thesis committee.
Under the University of Southern Indiana format, the following statement is centred approximately two inches from the top of the page:
“Accepted by the Graduate Faculty of the University of Southern Indiana, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Liberal Studies.”
The original signatures of the thesis committee members appear below the statement. Their names and academic titles should be typed beneath the signature lines. Students following this format should refer to Sample B.
Some universities now use a Declaration Page, Ethics Statement or electronic approval record instead. Students should not create an Acceptance Page unless it is required by their programme.
The abstract is a brief but comprehensive summary of the thesis. Under the format described in the original guide, it should contain no more than 350 words.
The abstract should not simply expand the title or copy sentences from the Introduction. A well-prepared abstract may be the most frequently read section of the entire Master’s Thesis because it allows readers to decide quickly whether the research is relevant to them.
The abstract should normally include:
The research background;
The research aim or question;
The Methodology;
The main findings;
The principal conclusion;
The significance of the research。
The abstract should normally be written after the main thesis has been completed. This allows the writer to report the actual research findings rather than the results that were originally expected.
Under the University of Southern Indiana format, the abstract itself is double-spaced. Its heading is single-spaced and includes the candidate’s name, degree, university, date of conferral, thesis title and major professor. Students should refer to Sample C when using this particular format.
The Acknowledgements section is optional unless the university states otherwise.
Only genuine assistance and indebtedness should be acknowledged. It is permissible to thank family members, friends, supervisors and committee members, but the section should remain brief and appropriate in tone.
Students must acknowledge any grants, scholarships, institutional assistance or financial support received during the research. Technical assistance, data access or specialist advice that made a meaningful contribution may also be mentioned.
Acknowledgements should not become a personal autobiography. One page is normally sufficient for a Master’s Thesis or Project Report.
Every thesis should include a Table of Contents.
As a general rule, the Table of Contents should list all major chapter headings and first-level subheadings. Additional heading levels may be included when they help readers locate specific sections, but an excessively detailed contents page can become difficult to read.
There must be exact correspondence between the Table of Contents and the headings used in the thesis. Chapter titles and subheadings should appear in the same wording, order and capitalisation as they do in the main text.
Each entry should include the page number on which the relevant section begins.
References, Bibliography and Appendices are part of the thesis and should be included in the Table of Contents as major divisions. They should be aligned and capitalised consistently with the other main sections.
Students using Microsoft Word should generate the Table of Contents automatically through Heading Styles. Manually typing page numbers often creates errors after later revisions.
Illustrations may include Tables, Figures, Charts, Graphs, Maps, Photographs, Computer Output and other visual materials.
Tables present information in rows and columns. Figures normally include charts, diagrams, graphs, models, photographs and similar visual material. Some academic disciplines use the term Plates for photographs, artwork or detailed maps.
Tables usually appear before figures in the preliminary lists. If the thesis contains many items of a particular type, separate lists may be created, such as:
List of Tables;
List of Figures;
List of Plates;
List of Maps;
List of Graphs。
If only one type of illustration is used, only one list is required. When illustrations are infrequent and an individual list would occupy less than approximately one-third of a page, they may be combined under a heading such as “List of Tables and Figures” or “List of Illustrations.”
A table may reasonably be described as an illustration, but it should not be labelled as a figure.
Each table or figure should have:
A unique number;
A clear title or caption;
A source where required;
A reference in the main text;
Consistent formatting。
The main text describes the research project and presents the academic argument.
Chapter titles will vary according to the subject and type of research. A conventional research thesis is likely to contain an Introduction, Literature Review, Methodology, Analysis or Findings, Discussion and Conclusion.
Creative projects, plays, novels, design portfolios or practice-based research may require different divisions. Any alternative structure should be discussed with the supervisor before substantial writing begins.
Every Master’s Thesis or Project Report should include an Introduction.
The Introduction presents the problem, topic or concept to be investigated. It explains the context of the research, identifies the academic or practical problem and introduces the approach that will be used.
A strong Introduction normally includes:
Research background;
Problem statement;
Research aim;
Research objectives;
Research questions or hypotheses;
Scope of the research;
Academic or practical significance;
A brief outline of the thesis structure。
The Introduction should articulate the central argument and identify the main sources or theoretical perspectives that will support the analysis. These sources should then be used throughout the thesis rather than mentioned only in the opening chapter.
Research aims and objectives must be realistic. A master’s project normally has limited time, data and access to participants. A focused research question is more likely to produce a convincing analysis than a very broad topic.
The Literature Review critically discusses and analyses previous research relevant to the specific issue examined in the project.
It should not become a sequence of summaries such as “Author A said this, Author B said that.” Instead, sources should be organised around themes, debates, theories or methodological differences.
A well-written Literature Review should:
Define the main concepts;
Explain relevant theories;
Compare different academic viewpoints;
Identify agreements and disagreements;
Evaluate the strengths and limitations of previous studies;
Identify a research gap;
Demonstrate how the current project develops from earlier work。
Literature from related academic fields may be included where it contributes directly to the research question. However, students should avoid adding sources simply to make the bibliography appear longer.
There should be logical continuity between previous research and the present project. By the end of the Literature Review, the reader should understand why the new study is necessary and how it relates to existing knowledge.
These chapters form the main body of the thesis.
They should describe the problem or research question, explain how the question was investigated and show how each stage of the research relates to the original purpose of the project.
The theory or analytical framework explains the ideas behind the analysis. The Methodology chapter explains how the research was designed and conducted.
Depending on the subject, this section may discuss:
Research philosophy;
Research approach;
Research design;
Data collection;
Sampling;
Ethical considerations;
Data analysis;
Reliability and validity;
Methodological limitations。
The thesis should report relevant data in sufficient detail to support its conclusions. Results that contradict the original hypothesis must also be reported. Removing inconvenient findings weakens the academic credibility of the research.
Data may be presented through tables, figures, charts and graphs where appropriate. Small visual materials should normally be incorporated into the main text close to the relevant discussion.
Large, detailed or voluminous materials should be identified in the main text and placed in the Appendices. This may include full questionnaires, interview transcripts, computer output, detailed calculations or supplementary datasets.
Findings and Discussion
Some programmes combine Findings and Discussion, while others require separate chapters.
The Findings section presents what the research discovered. The Discussion section explains what those findings mean and relates them to the Literature Review, research question and theoretical framework.
A useful discussion should answer questions such as:
Do the findings support the original hypothesis?
How do the results compare with earlier studies?
Were there any unexpected findings?
What are the theoretical or practical implications?
What limitations affect the interpretation?
The Conclusion tells the reader what the thesis has established. It should identify what was significant, explain why it matters and discuss the implications of the research.
It should not simply repeat sentences from the Introduction or provide a chapter-by-chapter summary.
A strong Conclusion should:
Answer the main research question;
Revisit the research objectives;
State the main contribution;
Explain practical or theoretical implications;
Acknowledge important limitations;
Make realistic recommendations;
Identify opportunities for further research。
The Conclusion should not introduce a completely new theory, dataset or major source that has not appeared earlier in the thesis.
Recommendations must arise from the findings. Generic suggestions such as “companies should improve management” or “future researchers should collect more data” are usually too vague to be useful.
Bibliographical references must be provided for all sources cited in the text.
The original University of Southern Indiana guide requires references to be prepared according to the MLA Style Manual. Students at other universities may instead be required to use Harvard, APA, Chicago, OSCOLA, IEEE or another referencing system.
The university’s required style must be followed consistently.
Books
A book reference normally contains:
Author’s surname and first name or initials;
Title of the book;
Edition, where relevant;
City or place of publication, if required;
Publisher;
Year of publication。
Journal Articles
A journal article reference normally contains:
Author’s name;
Title of the article;
Title of the journal;
Volume and issue number;
Year or date;
Page range;
DOI or stable URL, where required。
Electronic Sources
References to electronic works may need:
Author or organisation;
Page or document title;
Website or publisher;
Publication or update date;
URL;
Date of access。
The reference list should normally be arranged alphabetically by the surname of the first author. Every source cited in the text should appear in the reference list, and every item in the reference list should have a clear connection to the thesis.
Appendices should contain supplementary materials that are relevant to the project but would interrupt the flow of the main text.
They may also contain documents that are too large or detailed for inclusion in the main chapters but are necessary for a complete understanding of the research.
Suitable appendix materials include:
Questionnaires;
Interview guides;
Participant information sheets;
Consent forms;
Detailed statistical output;
Interview transcripts;
Computer code;
Spreadsheet calculations;
Technical specifications;
Additional photographs;
Ethics approval documents;
Project schedules and time sheets。
Appendices should be clearly labelled, for example:
Appendix A: Questionnaire;
Appendix B: Interview Questions;
Appendix C: Statistical Output;
Appendix D: Project Schedule。
Each appendix should be mentioned at an appropriate point in the main text. Students should not use the Appendices as a storage area for unrelated documents or material that was never discussed in the thesis.
