Business Research Assignment / Research Methods
Business Research / Research Methodology

Research is a systematic process used to collect, analyse and interpret information in order to answer a question or solve a problem.
Business Research applies this process to issues that arise in organisations and markets.
For example, a company may conduct research to understand:
why customers are leaving;
whether a new product is likely to succeed;
how employees respond to a new reward system;
whether a marketing campaign changes purchase intention;
why productivity differs across departments.
The scope of Business Research is broad because organisations are made up of people, systems and interactions between them.
| Research Area | Examples |
|---|---|
| People | Employees, customers, managers, supervisors |
| Groups & Organisations | Teams, departments, firms, industries, market segments |
| Systems | Accounting systems, HR systems, production processes, legal systems |
| Interactions | How people respond to organisational systems and policies |
Business Research can be formal or informal.
Formal Research normally follows a structured process with a defined Research Question, Method, Data Collection and Analysis.
Informal Research may involve managers gathering information through everyday observation and conversations.
For example, a restaurant manager speaking with customers every evening is collecting useful market information, but this is not the same as conducting a structured survey with a defined sample and analysis plan.
Good research should be systematic, transparent and capable of producing useful evidence.
Several characteristics are particularly important:
Clear Research Question — the study should know what it is trying to answer;
Appropriate Method — the method should fit the question;
Reliable Data — evidence should be collected carefully;
Transparency — the researcher should explain how conclusions were reached;
Replicability or Auditability — another researcher should be able to understand the research process;
Value — the information produced should justify the time and resources used.
Research studies can have different objectives depending on the problem being investigated.
| Objective | Typical purpose |
|---|---|
| Exploratory | Understand a relatively unclear problem and generate insights |
| Descriptive | Describe characteristics, behaviours or conditions |
| Explanatory | Explain relationships or why something happens |
| Hypothesis Testing | Test whether expected relationships are supported by evidence |
Descriptive Research focuses on describing what exists or what is happening.
Examples include:
customer satisfaction levels;
frequency of online shopping;
employee turnover rates;
consumer pReferences.
Analytical Research goes further by interpreting available evidence and examining relationships, patterns or possible explanations.
Descriptive:What is happening?
Analytical:What does it mean and why might it be happening?
Applied Research aims to solve a practical problem faced by an organisation, industry or society.
For example:
“Why has employee turnover increased in Company A during the last two years?”
Fundamental or Basic Research is more concerned with developing broader understanding or theory.
For example:
“How does perceived organisational support influence employee commitment?”
| Type | Main question |
|---|---|
| Applied Research | How can we solve this practical problem? |
| Fundamental Research | How can we understand this broader phenomenon better? |
This is one of the most common distinctions in Research Methods.
Quantitative Research generally uses numerical data to measure variables, test relationships or compare groups.
Typical methods include:
structured surveys;
experiments;
financial or market datasets;
statistical analysis.
Qualitative Research focuses more on meanings, experiences and interpretations.
Typical methods include:
interviews;
focus groups;
observations;
document analysis;
case studies.
| Question | Possible Method |
|---|---|
| How many customers prefer online shopping? | Quantitative Survey |
| Why do customers prefer online shopping? | Qualitative Interview |
| Does service quality affect purchase intention? | Quantitative Analysis |
| How do customers describe a poor service experience? | Qualitative Research |
Conceptual Research focuses on ideas, theoretical frameworks or the development and interpretation of concepts.
Empirical Research uses observations or data from the real world to answer a research question.
Empirical evidence can be quantitative or qualitative.
An interview study can also be empirical because the researcher is analysing evidence collected from real participants.
Research Method should normally follow the Research Question rather than the other way around.
“I will use quantitative research.”
Research Problem → Research Question → Evidence Needed → Research Method → Data Collection → Analysis
A common mistake in student research is choosing a method mainly because it is easy to use.
For example:
“I chose a questionnaire because it is quick.”
why the method fits the research objective;
what type of data is needed;
whether access to participants is realistic;
what limitations the method creates;
how the data will be analysed.
No.
A complicated design does not automatically produce better research.
A good study requires alignment between:
Research Question;
Research Objectives;
Methodology;
Data;
Analysis;
Conclusion.
Business Research provides organisations and researchers with a systematic way to investigate business problems and develop evidence-based answers.
Different research objectives require different approaches. Descriptive research can explain what is happening, analytical research can examine patterns and relationships, applied research can address practical problems, while quantitative and qualitative approaches provide different forms of evidence.
The strongest Research Design is therefore not the one that uses the most methods, but the one in which the Research Question, Method and Evidence fit together logically.
Methodology?
A:属于Business Research Assignment / Research Methods范文。
A:不是。
A:不一定。
