Business Studies with Accounting and Finance Report、International Business assignment和Financial Management case study的结构参考。

Since the 1990s, with the acceleration of global economic integration, the number of multinational companies around the world has increased rapidly. According to statistics, by 2000, the number of multinational companies worldwide had risen to 63,459, with approximately 700,000 overseas subsidiaries and institutions.
Their output value accounted for about one-third of global production, while their trade volume represented approximately 60 per cent of total world trade. Foreign direct investment by multinational corporations accounted for nearly 90 per cent of global cross-border direct investment. As a result, transnational corporations have played an increasingly important role in the development of the world economy (Robert J. Carbaugh, 2002).
The internationalisation of companies has become one of the major features of modern economic development and economic globalisation (Arvind C. Phatak, 1997). The emergence of multinational corporations should not simply be viewed as a result of economic globalisation. Their strong desire to expand into international markets, compete for market share and occupy new market positions has also become an important driving force behind globalisation.
Therefore, corporate internationalisation and economic globalisation support and influence each other. The need for companies to expand internationally provides an internal driving force for economic globalisation. At the same time, globalisation creates wider markets and more international development opportunities for multinational corporations.
Economic globalisation has therefore provided multinational companies with a broader stage on which to develop their international operations and achieve their strategic objectives (Volker Nocke and Stephen Yeaple, 2007).
This report examines the cross-border investment of Vivendi Water in the Baoji Water Project in China. It focuses on the company’s investment strategy, possible market-entry methods, the formation of the operating company and the reasons for selecting a joint venture structure.
Vivendi Water was an international company specialising in water supply, wastewater treatment and environmental services. Through its international operations, the company accumulated experience in water infrastructure investment, public utility management and cooperation with local governments.
As China experienced rapid economic growth and urbanisation, many cities faced increasing demand for reliable water supply systems and improved public infrastructure. This created opportunities for international water companies to participate in the development and operation of local water projects.
The Baoji Water Project provided Vivendi Water with an opportunity to enter a developing regional market in China. It also allowed the company to apply its international management experience and technical knowledge within a local public utility project.
Vivendi Water’s decision to invest in China was influenced by several strategic factors. China had a large population, a growing urban economy and a substantial need for infrastructure development. For an international water company, these conditions created long-term market potential.
The investment was also consistent with Vivendi Water’s international expansion strategy. By entering China, the company could increase its presence in Asia and develop experience in a market that was becoming increasingly important to multinational corporations.
However, investment in a public water project also involved a number of risks. These included differences in regulations, local management practices, government procedures, pricing systems and market conditions. Vivendi Water therefore needed to consider not only the financial return from the project but also the political, legal and operational environment.
From a Business Studies with Accounting and Finance perspective, this investment decision required the company to balance expected returns against possible risks. The project also required careful consideration of capital investment, operating costs, management control and long-term cash flow.
The formation of an operating company was an important stage in the Baoji Water Project. Rather than managing the project entirely from overseas, Vivendi Water needed a local operating structure that could work with the Chinese authorities and manage the daily activities of the water project.
The operating company could combine Vivendi Water’s technical and management experience with the local partner’s knowledge of the regional market. This arrangement helped the company understand local regulations, communicate with government departments and respond to operational problems more effectively.
The operating company was expected to be responsible for project management, water supply operations, financial control, maintenance and service quality. Its organisational structure also affected how profits, risks and management responsibilities were shared between the partners.
Before selecting its final investment structure, Vivendi Water had several possible ways to invest in the Baoji Water Project.
One option was to establish a wholly owned subsidiary. This method would have given Vivendi Water a high level of control over management and decision-making. However, it would also have required the company to bear most of the financial and operational risks.
A second option was to use a management contract. Under this model, Vivendi Water could provide management expertise without making a major capital investment. The disadvantage was that the company would have less control over the ownership and long-term development of the project.
A third option was to form a strategic partnership with a local organisation. This could reduce entry risks and improve access to local resources, although the responsibilities of each partner would need to be clearly defined.
The final option was a joint venture. A joint venture would allow Vivendi Water and the local partner to share investment costs, risks, resources and management responsibilities.
Each method had different financial and strategic implications. The final choice depended on the company’s investment objectives, its need for management control and its willingness to accept risk.
The joint venture model was a practical choice for Vivendi Water’s investment in the Baoji Water Project.
First, cooperation with a local partner could reduce the difficulties associated with entering an unfamiliar market. The local partner was more familiar with regulations, government procedures, market conditions and local business practices.
Second, the joint venture structure allowed investment costs and project risks to be shared. This was particularly important because water infrastructure projects normally require substantial initial investment and may take a long time to generate stable returns.
Third, the joint venture could combine different resources. Vivendi Water contributed technical knowledge, international management experience and project-operation skills, while the Chinese partner provided local relationships, market information and institutional support.
However, joint ventures can also create management problems. Differences may arise over investment priorities, profit distribution, staffing, pricing decisions and daily operations. A successful joint venture therefore requires clear agreements, effective communication and an appropriate division of responsibilities.
From an Accounting and Finance perspective, the joint venture model also affects Financial Reporting, capital contributions, profit allocation and risk assessment. These issues should be considered when evaluating whether the investment structure is suitable for the project.
The case of Vivendi Water’s investment in the Baoji Water Project shows that the internationalisation of companies and economic globalisation are closely connected. Multinational corporations benefit from access to new markets, while their international investment activities also contribute to the development of global business.
Vivendi Water had several possible ways to enter the Baoji water market. A wholly owned subsidiary could provide greater control, while a management contract would require less capital. However, the joint venture model offered a more balanced arrangement because it allowed the company to share risks, obtain local support and combine international expertise with local market knowledge.
The case also demonstrates that cross-border investment decisions cannot be based only on expected profits. Companies must consider local regulations, political conditions, operational risks, capital requirements and cooperation with local partners.
For students studying Business Studies with Accounting and Finance, the Vivendi Water case provides a useful example of foreign direct investment, international market entry and joint venture decision-making.
1. Business Studies with Accounting and Finance Report
