My report is about a company that we visited as part of our Business Studies course. The company was Goss Contiweb, which was based in Boxmeer in the Netherlands and formed part of Goss International.
At the time of our visit, Goss International was recognised as an important supplier of web offset printing solutions. Its business included newspaper and commercial printing systems, mailroom equipment, post-press equipment and long-term technical services.
The company had design and manufacturing facilities in several countries. It supplied printing systems, equipment upgrades, maintenance and technical support to customers in international markets.
This report presents the information that we collected during the visit. It discusses the purpose of the investigation, the company’s aims and objectives, its history, international locations, principal products and approach to human resource management.
Because this report is based on a historical company visit, the organisational structure and locations described below reflect the information available at that time.
The first purpose of our investigation was to collect enough information about Goss Contiweb to prepare a report of at least 15 pages.
A second purpose was to understand more about the company itself. Before the visit, most of us knew relatively little about industrial printing systems. The tour gave us an opportunity to see how the company operated and to learn about its products, employees and working environment.
I believe that we collected enough information to prepare this report. The visit also helped us understand how the business concepts studied in class could be applied to a real company.
On Wednesday, 17 November, we were invited to visit Goss Contiweb in Boxmeer.
We first received a guided tour of the company. During the tour, we saw parts of the working environment and learned about the company’s products and production processes.
After the tour, we asked our prepared questions to Evert, an important employee at Goss Contiweb. His answers provided much of the information used in this report.
The investigation therefore involved three stages:
Preparing questions before the visit
Observing the company during the guided tour
Interviewing a company employee
This approach allowed us to combine direct observation with information supplied by someone who understood the organisation.
We were not able to select the company ourselves. Our teacher, Hans Steenman, made the decision because he had more knowledge of the available organisations and knew where the IBS students were completing their work placements.
When I heard that our company was Goss Contiweb and that Ilhan was the IBS student working there, I was pleased. I already knew Ilhan, which made me feel more comfortable about visiting the company and asking questions.
Although we did not choose the business ourselves, Goss Contiweb was an interesting company to investigate. It operated in a specialised international industry and manufactured equipment that most students would not normally encounter.
The aims of a business are the broad goals that it wants to achieve. Objectives are more specific and measurable steps that help the business reach those aims.
A company may have a general aim such as becoming the market leader. To achieve that aim, it needs practical objectives concerning quality, productivity, customer service and cost control.
5.1 Aims of Goss Contiweb
The main aim of Goss Contiweb was to combine international innovation and design skills with a strong understanding of markets, customers and business requirements.
The company wanted to create genuine added value for its customers. Its most important long-term aim was to maintain a leading position in the web offset printing market.
Goss also intended to make sure that customers received high-quality products and dependable technical services.
Goss developed a Press Efficiency Improvement Programme covering both equipment and human resources.
The programme concentrated on four objectives:
Reducing newsprint waste
Improving press productivity
Improving print quality
Improving equipment reliability
The programme was carried out in two main stages.
The first stage involved evaluating the performance of a printing press, identifying immediate improvements and deciding what further action was needed.
The second stage involved agreeing to measurable improvements and monitoring changes in waste, productivity and print quality.
The company believed that these programmes could provide both short-term and long-term benefits that were greater than the customer’s initial investment.
These objectives supported the company’s wider aim of providing world-class products and services.
The history associated with Goss began in 1885, when two brothers, Fred and Sam Goss, founded the Goss Printing Press Company.
For more than a century, the company and its successors developed printing technology and became associated with several important innovations.
The company’s historical achievements included:
A straight-line newspaper press introduced in 1892
A newspaper web offset press introduced in 1962
A four-high newspaper press capable of printing four colours on both sides of a web
In February 2002, Goss International Corporation acquired substantially all the assets of Goss Graphic Systems.
In August 2004, Goss International acquired Heidelberg Web Systems. This helped the organisation become one of the world’s largest suppliers of web offset printing solutions during the period examined by this report.
Goss Contiweb was proud to be associated with this history. The company continued to concentrate on newspaper, commercial and post-press products, together with technical support services for customers.
At the time of the visit, Goss International was described as an independent company headquartered in Bolingbrook, Illinois, near Chicago in the United States.
The company had manufacturing operations or associated facilities in several international locations, including:
Durham, New Hampshire, United States
Fort Worth, Texas, United States
Preston, England
Nantes and Montataire, France
Boxmeer, the Netherlands
Sayama, Japan
A joint-venture operation in Shanghai, China
Regional sales offices were also reported in locations such as:
Tokyo, Japan
Melbourne, Australia
Singapore
Major Chinese cities
Paris, France
This international structure allowed Goss to serve customers in America, Europe and Asia.
Its operations combined modern production capabilities with a long history of precision engineering. Experienced teams worked to manufacture reliable, high-quality equipment at a price that represented value for customers.
The company also maintained a global focus on quality and operated ISO-certified facilities in several regions.
One of the most important products associated with Goss Contiweb was the M-600 printing press.
Printers in different parts of the world used the M-600 to produce high-quality commercial printing. The press became an important Reference product within the 16-page commercial printing market.
The M-600 was designed to provide high print quality, productivity and reliability.
Goss Contiweb was not a wholesaler. It was a producer specialising in the press and dryer systems that formed the M-600 production line.
This specialisation allowed the company to develop detailed knowledge of its equipment. However, it also meant that trained employees were essential. New employees could not be expected to understand a complex printing system immediately, so technical instruction and workplace experience were necessary.
Human resource management is one of the most important functions in any business.
It covers areas such as:
Recruitment and employee retention
Employee dismissal and disciplinary procedures
Working conditions
Health and safety
Training and development
Employee promotion
Communication with trade unions and employee organisations
For a manufacturing company such as Goss Contiweb, human resource management was particularly important because employees worked with specialised machinery and technical processes.
Goss International described itself as an equal opportunity employer.
The company considered qualified applicants without discrimination based on race, religion, sex, national origin, age, marital status, sexual orientation or disability.
Employees were offered competitive salaries and benefits. Bonuses could also be paid in recognition of achievement or company performance.
Career development opportunities were another part of the company’s employment offer. This was important because the equipment required specialist knowledge that employees often developed over time.
According to the information received during the visit, dismissal was not common. Employees were normally expected to remain with the company unless there were serious performance or conduct problems.
The working environment at Goss Contiweb appeared clean and well organised. Cleaning was carried out regularly, while machinery, tools and working areas were arranged in a structured way.
Working hours depended on the employee’s job.
Office employees generally worked normal office hours, approximately from nine in the morning until five in the afternoon. Fitters and technical employees could have more flexible working hours because the amount and timing of technical work were not always predictable.
Employees were paid monthly. When the company produced a profit at the end of the year, workers could receive a bonus.
At the time of our visit, the company believed that job security was relatively stable because there was sufficient demand within the graphic and printing industry.
An employee’s working conditions include both contractual matters and the physical working environment. Contractual matters include salary, working hours and benefits. The wider working environment includes safety, equipment, cleanliness, supervision and communication.
Goss considered employee training to be very important.
A new employee would not automatically understand the company’s equipment or know how to work with a complex printing system such as the M-600.
Training helped employees understand:
How the equipment operated
How individual tasks should be completed
How the production process was organised
How to use machinery safely
How to respond when technical problems occurred
Training benefited both the employee and the company. Employees gained confidence and technical knowledge, while the company benefited from better productivity, quality and safety.
Training could also improve employee motivation. Workers were more likely to feel valued when the company invested in their development and gave them opportunities to learn.
Customer and employee safety had to be treated as a priority.
Customers visiting the company had the right to expect Goss Contiweb to take reasonable precautions to protect their safety and wellbeing. This remained important even when some industrial activities involved unavoidable risks.
The company used several safety and security measures, including:
Security cameras
Burglar alarms
Smoke detectors
Fire extinguishers
Clearly marked fire exits
Controlled entry and exit points
Protection of the premises outside office hours
Employees who felt threatened or unsafe could report the matter to the Human Resources department.
The company also trained employees to use potentially hazardous equipment. A new employee might not understand the machinery or the risks connected with it, so appropriate instruction was necessary before working independently.
Modern equipment was generally considered safer than older machinery because technological improvements allowed companies to introduce better controls and protective systems.
Employees were required to use a pass to clock in when arriving at work and clock out when leaving the building.
This system allowed the company to know which employees were present and who was absent.
If an employee was absent without prior notice, the relevant department could check the attendance record and contact the employee.
Employees were expected to communicate an absence before 10 o’clock. This helped supervisors plan the working day and arrange cover where necessary.
A clear absence procedure was useful because unexpected staff shortages could affect production, maintenance and customer service.
Goss Contiweb had a company assistance group responsible for emergency and calamity planning.
The emergency plan was tested regularly in cooperation with local organisations, including the fire service.
Regular testing was important because employees needed to know how to respond during a fire, accident or other emergency. A written plan would not be effective if employees did not understand their individual responsibilities.
Emergency exercises could also help the company identify weaknesses in its procedures before a real incident occurred.
The company carried out regular ARBO-related checks. In the Netherlands, ARBO requirements concern occupational health, safety and working conditions.
The inspections examined matters such as:
Workplace design
Safe use of equipment
Employee satisfaction
Physical working conditions
The general working environment
Ergonomics was particularly relevant to office employees, production workers and fitters who might repeat the same movements or remain in one position for long periods.
Appropriate workplace design could reduce injuries, improve comfort and help employees work more effectively.
The visit gave us useful information that would have been difficult to obtain only from books or websites.
Seeing the workplace made it easier to understand the scale and complexity of industrial printing equipment. The interview also allowed us to ask questions about employment, training, working conditions and safety.
One limitation was that much of the information came from a single company representative. A more detailed investigation could include interviews with employees from different departments and additional company documents.
Even with this limitation, the visit provided enough information for our report and improved our understanding of how business theory operates in a real manufacturing company.
Goss Contiweb was an interesting company to investigate because it combined international operations, specialist engineering and a long history in the printing industry.
The company aimed to maintain a leading market position by offering innovative products, reliable services and measurable improvements in printing performance.
Its Press Efficiency Improvement Programme focused on reducing waste, increasing productivity, improving print quality and strengthening equipment reliability.
The M-600 was one of the company’s most important products. Its complexity demonstrated why trained and experienced employees were essential.
Human resource management also played an important role. Recruitment, training, working conditions, attendance management, employee safety and emergency planning all affected the company’s ability to operate successfully.
Overall, the visit helped me understand that business success does not depend only on selling a good product. A company also needs clear objectives, skilled employees, safe working conditions and reliable operational procedures.
